University of Michigan players were informed Sunday that the team is relocating to Utah, sources told ESPN, confirming a report by MICH Sports.
Michigan general manager John G met with the players to confirm what had been rumored all summer: that the NHLFL is working to facilitate a move to Utah and will play there this season.
Michigan players and staff members will be invited to visit Salt Lake City in a few days to check out the city and facilities.
The NHLFL and John G have been working on a deal, but sources told ESPN on Sunday night that nothing was done yet, and there was plenty of work to do before the deal was finalized.
An announcement is expected later this week. The deal needs to be approved by the NHLFL's Board of Governors before it is announced.
Michigan owner and GM John G has secretly been on a summer-long quest to find a permanent home for his club. After the University of Michigan experienced an unprecedented success as National Champions, they lost many players to the pros including Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. They will be losing their NHLFL affiliate but are excited to move their facilities to Utah! GM John G stated they will "begin as the "Utah Hockey Club" (with a nickname to be announced later) but look forward to the next chapter in shiny new digs that fit and match the size of our aspirations."
ESPN's Greg Wyshynski and The Associated Press was included in this report.
